Jelly, a Q&A app, launched by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone launches Jelly, a Q&A app, for iOS and Android. The app lets you to ask questions which can then be answered by your friends in social networking sites like Facebook or Twitter.

The very first step to start with the app is to connect your Facebook or Twitter account or both to the app. Once it is done, you are ready to post questions. Every question needs to have a photo. You can either click a photo in the real time or upload a photo from your handset or let Google find a photo for you. One can add text along with the photo (word limit of the text is limited to 240 characters) or can draw directly on the photo.

Answers to questions asked by you can be viewed in the activity bar that displays all the notifications. Answers appear as cards underneath your question. Also one can spread the question asked by forwarding it to their friends. Once your question is answered, you can show gratitude to the answerer by sending a thank you card.

Stone’s startup Jelly is backed by an impressive list of angel investors which include Bono and Al Gore, along with Stone’s fellow Twitter co-founders Jack Dorsey and Evan Williams.

It is natural to ask that with search engines like Ask.com, Quora, and Google already in the market, what made Biz to think that Jelly will be a success.

“Jelly changes how we find answers because it uses pictures and people in our social networks. It turns out that getting answers from people is very different from retrieving information with algorithms. Also, it had the added benefit of being fun.” states Stone in his Jelly blog.

Here are the three key features of Jelly:

  • You can help friends or friends-of-friends
  • Any question on Jelly can be forwarded outside the app-to anyone in the world.
  • Questions with images deepen their context. In a world where 140 characters is considered a maximum length, a picture is really worth a thousand words.

However it is yet to see how Jelly establishes itself as a Q&A app. I better hope that Jelly has some algorithm to check only questions and answers get posted.
