Alibaba launches a mobile OS

Some days ago we reported that Alibaba is working on a mobile OS. Now the company has annouced the launch of the Aliyun OS for mobile phones. Aliyun OS is based on Linux operating system.

Its interface is cloud and it is easier to develop app for this OS. The mobile OS will feature cloud services including email, weather updates, and GPS navigation tools. Moreover, users can seamlessly synchronize, store, and backup data such as contact information, call logs, text messages, notes, and photos to AliCloud’s remote data center.

Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing said “The business model on the Web is already established.” He further stated, “if you can bring the Web on to the phone, you can basically bring that business model on to the phone.”

The Aliyun OS comes with 20 “Cloud apps” that access Alibaba company services over the Internet. The apps include Internet search, a barcode scanner to find products online and an app listing group-buying discounts. Alibaba plans to bring one new Cloud app to the OS each day.

This OS is launched with K-Touch W700 smartphone which costs 2,680 yuan and is only for chinese market for now.
