Moto G 3rd Generation Review

Moto G 3rd Generation Review

Few days back, Motorola launched its Moto G 3rd Generation smartphone in India. Since the launch, the smartphone is trending in India. In this price, Motorola is offering water resistant smartphone which surprised us. Quick hands-on impressed us, so we decided to review it to know how it actually performs. Moto G 3rd Gen is available in 2 variants with 2GB and 1 GB RAM. I recommend to go with 2GB RAM variant which also has 16 GB internal storage. Back shells are also available to give this smartphone better look.

Moto G Gen 3 is an important phone for the company because this is the first phone from the company since Lenovo acquired it.

You can watch this unboxing video to know more:

Design:

Design of the smartphone is good and solid. Grip on hands is also very good. Its solid build gives you confidence that your smartphone will not easily break on slips from hands. So, users can comfortably perform most of the tasks from single hand.

It lacks LED notification light but comes with active screen for notifications. It has power button at the right side along with volume rocker keys. Physical design measures 142.1 x 72.4 x 11.6mm that is slightly larger than previous generation of Moto G smartphone.

Speakers are at the front lower side. So, volume is good. This placing is also good for alarms. Because back speakers generally produce less sound slow if you put the phone on bed.

Back covers are removable and you can customize it with different color shells. You can check these on Flipkart.

Moto G 3rd Generation back covers

Best thing about the phone is its IPX7 rating. It means the phone can survive in water up to 3 feet for up to 30 minutes. But you need to properly seal back cover. Surprising thing is that no port has covers and still Motorola achieved this.

Display

Moto G (2015) also features a 5 inch IPS LCD display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution at a pixel density of 294ppi. I think company could improve the display. Viewing angles are good but I feel that display is not much bright even if you are using it on full brightness. But still display quality is good and touch response is awesome.

Screen is also protected with Gorilla Glass.

Performance

It is powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Cortex-A53 processor on Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset with Adreno 306 GPU and 2GB of RAM. 1 GB RAM variant is also available but I recommend to go with 2GB RAM variant. I also tested 2GB RAM variant for performance. Overall performance of the phone is impressive. You will not find any kind of lag or delay anywhere.

Gaming performance is also very good. I tried various high-end games including Asphalt 8 and was satisfied with the performance. Unlike other phones in similar price range, it does not heats up on long gaming. Minimal heating is there which is negligible.

Camera

I already added in-depth camera review of Moto G 3rd Generation. You can check that article for camera samples too. It has a 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 lens and dual-tone LED flash. Rear camera is good in both low light and good light.

It has a 5 MP front camera which also performs good. But in low-light, performance of front camera is not that much of good.

It can record full HD videos. It can also record 720p slow motion videos.

User interface

Motorola Moto G 3rd generation comes stock Android 5.1.1 Lollipop vanilla Android UI with few improvements. You get less pre-installed third party apps but few motorola specific apps are there.

Connectivity

Moto G 3rd generation comes with quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity. This time, it comes with 4G LTE connectivity but previously company launched a different LTE variant. LTE bands will vary based on market. There are also CDMA-models depending on regions. In India, it is available in dual SIM connectivity.

Other connectivity options are Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n with Wireless Hotspot, microUSB 2.0 port with USB host,SatNav with GPS, GLONASS and Beidu .

It lacks NFC and IR-port, or Wi-Fi ac.

Battery

It has 2,470mAh battery which is larger than the battery of its predecessor. Battery performance is the most impressive thing in the smartphone. Battery takes around 2 hours 45 minutes in full charging with the charger comes with the phone. On mixed usage, you will get around 28 hours battery backup which is impressive. I got this result with one sim inserted and connected to wifi all time. I also did gaming and listen to music various times in this time period. In short, it was normal smartphone use to test how the battery will perform.

On minimal use, you will surely see improvement in backup and hardcore use will drain battery faster. But battery is better and good for those who want a good phone with good battery.

Sound and call audio quality

Audio quality is good. Not very loud but good. On phone call, it offers good and clear voice which is better than Moto G gen 2. So, you can easily talk with other persons even in crowd.
