In the world of phone and tablet tech, faster and more efficient memory is always needed. The latest types, LPDDR5T and LPDDR5X, are made to meet this demand. SK hynix announced LPDDR5T back in January 2023 and will be soon available in smartphones and tablets. The full form of LPDDR5T is Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo that manages to clock as high as 9.6Gbps/pin. It makes it 13% faster than LPDDR5X. now that LPDDR5T is ready to be available in devices, you need to understand how LPDDR5T and LPDDR5X differ. Both the memory are upgrades of LPDDR5 and provide better performance. But what sets them apart, and which one should you pick? In this article, I will provide a detailed comparison of LPDDR5T and LPDDR5X.

LPDDR5T is the newer, faster memory. It is also quicker than LPDDR5X which most flagship smartphones are currently using. LPDDR5T runs at 9.6 Gbps. It makes the new memory 13% faster than LPDDR5X, which runs at 8.5 Gbps. This means better multitasking, gaming, and smoother video editing. LPDDR5X might not be as fast as LPDDR5T, but it’s still a good choice. With a data rate of 8.5 Gbps and a peak bandwidth of 68 GB/s, it handles most mobile tasks well. It’s also more available and cheaper than LPDDR5T.
Both LPDDR5T and LPDDR5X are designed to use power smartly. LPDDR5T is especially good at this, using about 10% less power than LPDDR5X, making it better for battery life.
Both use the same technology for making their parts, which helps them perform better and use less energy.
LPDDR5X is already on the market and used in many high-performance devices. LPDDR5T is not out for sale yet, but it is expected to be available in 2024. Mediatek just announced Dimensity 9300 which supports LPDDR5T.
The choice between LPDDR5T and LPDDR5X depends on what you need. Although users cannot select what memory they want in their smartphones or tablets, they can certainly look at the specs of devices to understand what memory the device is using and how the performance will be. If you want top-notch performance, LPDDR5T is the way to go. It is better than LPDDR5X.
