Microsoft has officially revealed that it is working on the next generation of Xbox hardware, currently known by the codename Project Helix. The announcement came from Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma, who shared the news on X.

The official Xbox account also posted a teaser video without revealing anything.

While the teaser did not reveal much, it signals the beginning of the next chapter for the Xbox platform. Early details suggest that Microsoft may be preparing a major change in how consoles work by mixing the traditional console experience with PC gaming capabilities.

This is also a confirmation that Microsoft is developing a successor to the current Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. More details are expected to be shared with developers and partners at the Game Developers Conference (GDC).

The announcement is also notable because it is one of the first major decisions revealed by Sharma after she recently became the head of Microsoft Gaming.

Reports suggest that the upcoming device could function more like a gaming PC that is optimized for the living room. This also fits Microsoft’s long-term strategy. Over the last few years, the company has focused on building a broader gaming ecosystem through services like Xbox Game Pass, cloud gaming, and PC integration.

Allowing PC games to run directly on a console could reduce the traditional barriers between platforms and make the Xbox ecosystem more flexible.

Some industry reports suggest that Microsoft could be targeting a 2027 launch window for its next console generation. If that timeline is correct, Project Helix would arrive roughly seven years after the Xbox Series X and Series S, which launched in 2020.

There is also speculation that the console may run a Windows-based system to make it easier to support PC titles and potentially even PC storefronts. If that becomes true, it could also support platforms like Steam or Epic Games, though Microsoft has not confirmed this.

If Project Helix successfully bridges the gap between console and PC gaming, it could change how players think about gaming platforms. Instead of choosing between a console and a gaming PC, players might get a system that combines both experiences.

Xbox has already shifted toward services and cross-platform gaming, and a hybrid console fits perfectly into that vision. If the system truly supports PC games and Xbox titles seamlessly, it could offer one of the largest game libraries ever available on a console.
