Capcom’s strong 2026 continues with another major success. Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold 1 million copies on its launch day, marking a strong return for the franchise after more than two decades away.

Released on September 4 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2, the game is the first new mainline Onimusha title in over 20 years. Capcom said its launch-day sales also pushed lifetime sales of the Onimusha series past 10 million units.

The game has also made a strong start on PC. Techlomedia Gaming data shows that Onimusha: Way of the Sword peaked at more than 85,000 concurrent players on Steam, indicating that the franchise has managed to attract a sizeable modern PC audience.

Capcom attributed the launch success partly to its pre-release strategy, which included a playable demo and hands-on events designed to give players an early look at the game. The approach appears to have worked, particularly for a franchise that has been dormant for so long.

The launch is also important for Capcom’s wider strategy of reviving older franchises. Alongside its established hits such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, the company has been increasingly looking at its dormant IP portfolio, which includes Devil May Cry, Mega Man, Ace Attorney, Dino Crisis, and Okami.

Onimusha’s performance suggests there is still commercial potential in these older properties when they are brought back with modern gameplay and production values. Capcom has already announced a new Okami title, while a new Devil May Cry game is reportedly in development.

With Resident Evil Requiem surpassing 8 million sales and Pragmata crossing 2.5 million, Onimusha: Way of the Sword gives Capcom another strong performer in 2026. More importantly, its first-day performance gives the company another reason to continue mining its dormant franchises for future releases.
