OnePlus is putting more focus on photography with the OnePlus 16. The company has now revealed the phone’s camera setup, confirming a 200MP main camera and a new LUMO imaging system. It is a significant change from the previous generation and comes alongside the latest Snapdragon flagship platform.
The main camera uses a 1/1.4-inch sensor with an f/1.6 aperture. OnePlus has not treated the 200MP sensor as the only upgrade. The front camera is also moving to a 50MP sensor with autofocus, while the telephoto camera is getting a new Sony sensor.
The rear setup includes a 50MP Sony IMX882 periscope camera with 3x optical zoom and up to 6x lossless zoom. A 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 116-degree field of view completes the setup.
The new hardware is paired with OnePlus’ LUMO imaging system. It brings computational photography and colour processing to the camera system, with features aimed at giving users more control over the final image.
OnePlus is also adding a high-resolution mode for 200MP photos and a Master Mode designed for a more natural, film-like look. A 65:24 wide-field mode is also available for a wider cinematic-style frame.
Interestingly, the move to a new main sensor does not mean every camera specification has increased. The telephoto offers 3x optical zoom, compared with 3.5x on the OnePlus 15. The new Sony IMX882 sensor, however, gives OnePlus a different hardware approach for the zoom camera.
The camera changes are backed by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. OnePlus has confirmed the chipset for the phone as it prepares to launch the flagship. The new platform is also designed to handle the processing demands of features such as computational photography.
The OnePlus 16 will be available with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The confirmed configurations are 12GB + 256GB, 12GB + 512GB, 16GB + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB.
OnePlus has also shown the phone in three colours: Tomorrow’s Starlight, Dark Forest and Martian Masterpiece.
The design uses a flat display with symmetrical bezels and rounded corners. The company is also introducing an Interstellar Light Effect, which uses the phone’s lighting system for calls, notifications, charging, gaming and other interactions.
OnePlus has not yet announced the price of the OnePlus 16. The phone is expected to launch in China soon, with details about wider availability still to be announced.
