Microsoft has started testing a new ad-supported cloud gaming option for Xbox users. The feature lets players stream games they already own for free, but it comes with a major limitation.
Under the new trial, anyone with an Xbox account can stream supported games they own on compatible devices without paying for cloud gaming. Before each session begins, players will watch a short advertisement. Microsoft says ads will only play before gameplay starts, so there will be no interruptions while playing.
The biggest restriction is the session length. Each free cloud gaming session is limited to one hour. Once the time is up, players will need to start a new session by watching another ad.
Microsoft says the feature is designed to make gaming more accessible, especially as gaming hardware becomes more expensive. It also gives Xbox One owners another way to play newer games built for Xbox Series X|S without upgrading their console.
According to the company, cloud gaming can help players enjoy modern Xbox games on the devices they already own, making gaming more affordable in regions where buying a new console may not be easy.
Microsoft also shared its approach to advertising on Xbox. The company says it wants ads to improve accessibility without hurting the gaming experience. Its key principles include:
- Ads should provide value to players.
- Gameplay should never be interrupted by ads.
- Advertisements should meet the same quality standards as Xbox content.
- Players should always know when they are seeing an advertisement.
- Ads should match the platform and player expectations.
The feature is currently rolling out to members of the Xbox Insider Program for testing. Microsoft plans to expand the trial to more Insider members before making it available to all Xbox users.
