Meta has introduced a new privacy feature for its AI smart glasses that will automatically disable the camera if the device detects that the capture LED has been blocked, damaged, or removed. The update is designed to prevent users from secretly recording photos and videos without people nearby knowing.
The feature will be available on Meta’s second-generation smart glasses through a software update.

Meta AI glasses include a small LED indicator that lights up whenever the user captures a photo or starts recording a video. It serves as a visual indicator to people around the wearer that the camera is active.
With the latest update, the glasses will continuously check whether the LED is functioning properly. If it detects that the indicator has been physically altered or is no longer working, the camera will be disabled. Users will only be able to use the camera again after the system confirms that the LED is working normally.
The change comes after reports claimed that some users were covering the capture LED with tape or removing it completely to hide when recordings were taking place. According to Meta, some people even attempted permanent modifications to bypass the privacy indicator.
To address this, the company has improved its ability to detect physical tampering and prevent the camera from being used when the LED is compromised.
Meta also announced strict action against people and businesses that promote or offer capture LED modification services.
The company said it will remove related ads, Marketplace listings, and social media posts from its platforms. Accounts found promoting these services could face suspension or permanent bans. Meta also warned that it is prepared to take legal action against businesses offering such modifications, even if they operate outside Meta’s platforms.
Meta says it is working on additional privacy protections for its AI glasses and will introduce more safeguards in future updates.
The announcement comes shortly after the launch of Meta’s latest smart glasses, developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica. The glasses feature a 12-megapixel camera and are powered by the Muse Spark AI model.
