WhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations globally. It introduces a new way for users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. The feature focuses on improving privacy and will gradually become available to users over the coming months.

Unlike usernames on other social media platforms, WhatsApp usernames are not designed for public discovery. The company will not offer a public directory or username suggestions. People will only be able to contact someone if they already know the exact username.

Users will receive an in-app notification when the feature becomes available for their account. Once enabled, they can set a username by going to Settings > Account > Username in the latest version of WhatsApp.

For creators, businesses, and public figures, WhatsApp allows reserving usernames that match their existing Instagram or Facebook handles. This helps maintain a consistent identity across Meta’s platforms. Regular users will also get an integrated username generator that can suggest unique usernames without revealing personal information.

WhatsApp is also introducing an optional security feature called Username Key. When enabled, anyone trying to start a conversation using a username for the first time must also know the account’s Username Key. Users can change or reset this key at any time for better control over who can contact them.

The feature is designed for situations where people do not want to share their phone numbers immediately. This includes joining school parent groups, neighbourhood communities, local events, or chatting with someone new.

Once the rollout is complete later this year, users who start conversations using usernames will be able to keep their phone numbers hidden from the recipient.
