Meta has announced that Threads has crossed 500 million monthly active users. The platform has added around 100 million users since August and demonstrated steady growth as it competes in the social media space.
Threads was originally launched as a response to users looking for alternatives after changes at X, formerly Twitter. Over time, it has evolved into a standalone platform with its own identity, helped by tight integration with Instagram, which makes onboarding easier for new users.
Meta said a major driver of recent growth has been the platform’s community features. To build on this, Threads is expanding and improving how communities work across the app.
Meta is officially taking the Communities feature out of beta. The update brings several changes aimed at making topic-based groups more visible and active.
Users will now see distinct icons for each community. A new Communities Hub is also being added to the main menu for easier access. Meta is also introducing Community Progress, which shows how close a topic is to becoming a full community and what users can do to help it grow.
The platform is also expanding recognition for active users by giving more people the “community champion” status. Native-language community tags are also rolling out in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Meta is also expanding Live Chats across more communities. Users will be able to quote specific moments from chats and share them directly to their feed.
Another major addition is a new feature called “Your Algo.” It works alongside the existing “Dear Algo” controls and lets users adjust what content they want to see more or less of. The key difference is that “Your Algo” can be set for specific topics and time periods.
Users can choose settings that last for one, three, or seven days. These preferences are private and only visible to the user. Meta is rolling both “Dear Algo” and “Your Algo” into a single control hub for easier management. The feature is currently rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
