Xbox Game Studios and Ninja Theory have officially announced Senua, a brand-new action-adventure game set in the Hellblade universe. The game is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.
The announcement came as a surprise for many fans, especially because the game is also coming to PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox and PC. While the Hellblade series is known for its dark storytelling and psychological themes, Senua appears to take the franchise in a slightly different direction with a standalone adventure that can also serve as an entry point for new players.
In Senua, players once again step into the role of the Celtic warrior Senua. This time, she finds herself trapped between life and death in a fractured vision of purgatory. Her mission is deeply personal. Senua must fight her way through a dangerous world to reach the afterlife and reunite with the people she loved and lost. Along the way, she will face terrifying creatures, mythical beings, and forces that threaten everything she believes in.
According to Ninja Theory, the story is designed as a standalone experience. This means new players can jump into the game without needing to play previous Hellblade titles.
Players will battle creatures born from fear, pain, and destruction using tactical and visceral combat mechanics. The game will feature multiple weapons, dual-wielding combat, and powerful abilities that can be used against enemies and large boss encounters. Based on the game’s description, players can expect a combat system that is more action-focused while still maintaining the intense and personal feel that the Hellblade series is known for.
Fans of games like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, and even titles such as God of War Ragnarök may find similarities in the blend of storytelling, exploration, and close-quarters combat.
One of the most interesting aspects of Senua is its setting. Players will explore a fantastical version of purgatory viewed through Senua’s psychosis.
The world is described as an interconnected realm shaped by memory, pain, and myth. Players will need to use perception, exploration, and puzzle-solving to uncover hidden truths. The journey will also involve confronting mysterious gods, spirits, and mythical creatures that stand in Senua’s path.
Unlike previous games that were closely connected, Senua is being promoted as a defining standalone story. Ninja Theory says the game focuses on themes of defiance, choice, legacy, and inner peace.
The studio is once again placing a strong emphasis on immersive visuals, cinematic storytelling, and audio design. These elements helped make the earlier Hellblade games stand out, and fans can expect the same level of attention to detail in this new title.
Ninja Theory has not yet revealed a specific release date, gameplay footage, or pricing details. More information is expected to be shared closer to launch.
