OpenAI has announced a major upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system that makes ChatGPT better at remembering useful information, understanding user preferences, and maintaining context across conversations. The company says the new memory architecture is more capable and efficient than the previous version. It is designed to help ChatGPT provide more personalized responses without requiring users to repeat the same information in every chat.
OpenAI first introduced saved memories in February 2024. This feature allowed users to tell ChatGPT what information it should remember, such as writing preferences, travel plans, or personal interests.
While useful, the feature relied heavily on users manually asking ChatGPT to save information. Over time, some saved memories could also become outdated.
In April 2025, OpenAI expanded the feature by allowing ChatGPT to reference information from previous conversations. This was powered by a background process called “dreaming,” which automatically identified and stored useful details from chat history.
The latest upgrade builds on that foundation and aims to make memory more accurate and useful over long periods.
According to OpenAI, the new memory system significantly improves ChatGPT’s ability to recall facts, follow user preferences, and maintain accuracy over time.
The company says factual recall has improved from 67.9% to 82.8%. Preference adherence has increased from 55.3% to 71.3%, while long-term accuracy has improved from 52.2% to 75.1%.
These improvements should help ChatGPT deliver responses that are more relevant to individual users and better aligned with their preferences.
Another notable addition is the new memory summary page. The page allows users to see what ChatGPT remembers about them. Users can review stored memories, update details, correct information, and provide instructions about what ChatGPT should remember or bring up in future conversations.
This gives users more transparency and control over their stored information.
The upgraded memory system is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in the United States starting today. OpenAI says it plans to expand availability to more countries and to Free and Go users in the coming weeks.
The update is another step toward making ChatGPT more personalized and capable of maintaining long-term context, while also giving users greater control over what the AI remembers.
