The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting a brand-new story expansion, even more than a decade after the game originally launched.
CD Projekt RED has officially announced “Songs of the Past”, a new expansion for The Witcher 3 that will once again bring back Geralt of Rivia for another adventure. The studio confirmed that the expansion is being developed together with Fool’s Theory, the team known for games like The Thaumaturge and Seven: The Days Long Gone.
This announcement comes as a surprise because most fans believed CD Projekt RED had already moved on from The Witcher 3 and shifted focus completely to The Witcher 4 and other future projects.
Right now, the studio has only shared the title and teaser artwork. There is no gameplay footage yet, and story details are still under wraps. But the title “Songs of the Past” is already creating speculation among fans. Many believe the expansion could revisit important moments or characters from Geralt’s earlier life.
Some fans also think this expansion may help connect the story between The Witcher 3 and the next Witcher game. CD Projekt RED has not confirmed that, but the timing has naturally sparked theories online.
Interestingly, the announcement was apparently revealed earlier than planned because of a launcher leak. According to the studio, the reveal was originally scheduled for an upcoming livestream.
Alongside the expansion announcement, CD Projekt RED also confirmed that PC system requirements for The Witcher 3 will increase in future updates.
The new minimum PC requirements include:
- AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400
- NVIDIA GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB
- 12GB RAM
- 70GB SSD storage
- Windows 11
- DirectX 12 support
The company says Windows 10 support is ending because Microsoft will stop supporting the operating system later this year. CD Projekt RED also says SSDs and DirectX 12 are now necessary for smoother asset streaming and future technical improvements.
This move may disappoint some older PC users, especially because The Witcher 3 originally became popular partly due to how accessible it was on mid-range hardware. But from the studio’s perspective, supporting modern hardware standards likely makes future updates easier to maintain.
