It seems OnePlus is planning to enter a completely new category. Recent leaks suggest that the company is working on an Android-powered handheld gaming console. Early details hint at a very different approach compared to existing devices.
An alleged image of the device surfaced on Weibo, showing a design that looks like a mix of a smartphone and a gaming console. The device appears thicker than a regular phone and includes built-in grips on both sides for better handling during long gaming sessions.
The leaked render also shows shoulder trigger buttons and a USB Type-C port. We can also spot a feature that is unusual for a gaming console. The device could come with rear cameras. This suggests that OnePlus may be building a hybrid device that can function as both a phone and a gaming handheld.
According to multiple reports, the handheld could feature an 8-inch display, which is significantly larger than most smartphones and closer to compact tablets. It is also expected to run on a flagship MediaTek Dimensity chipset, possibly from the upcoming high-end lineup.
The device is said to target high frame rate gaming with better thermal management and a large battery. Some reports also suggest advanced cooling solutions to handle long gaming sessions without throttling.
Instead of relying heavily on physical joysticks like traditional handheld consoles, OnePlus may focus on a touchscreen-first approach. The idea is to improve multi-finger input, touch accuracy, and responsiveness, especially for FPS games.
