Epic Games is reportedly working on a new extraction shooter featuring characters from Disney. The game is part of a broader partnership between the two companies. The information comes from a new report by Bloomberg, which cites multiple current and former employees familiar with the plans.
Epic is currently known for Fortnite and Unreal Engine. The new game will be a major shift for the company.
Back in 2024, Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games to build a larger gaming and entertainment ecosystem. Since then, the collaboration has mostly been visible through in-game crossovers inside Fortnite. These crossovers have reportedly driven strong engagement and even boosted subscriptions for Disney+.
Now, it looks like the partnership is moving beyond collaborations into full game development. According to the report, Epic is developing an extraction-style shooter that could launch as early as November this year.
The game is said to follow a format similar to Arc Raiders, where players enter a map, collect resources, fight enemies, and then try to safely extract. The key difference here is the use of Disney characters instead of traditional shooter avatars. Players will reportedly control familiar characters while completing objectives and escaping from hostile environments.
However, the report also mentions internal concerns. Some developers feel the gameplay mechanics are not very original, which could impact how the game is received at launch.
The extraction shooter is not the only project in the pipeline. Epic is reportedly working on two more Disney-backed titles. One of these projects is said to have received average internal feedback, while the third has already seen reduced resources. Reports suggest this decision was made to speed up development and meet Disney’s expectations for quicker releases.
An Epic spokesperson confirmed that current plans do not fully reflect the long-term ambition of the Disney collaboration. The company is working towards building a larger entertainment ecosystem.
Epic is struggling. The company recently laid off over 1,000 employees and also shut down several internal Fortnite-based experiences. If the Bloomberg report is accurate, the Disney partnership could play a major role in Epic’s efforts to regain momentum.
There have also been recent reports suggesting that Disney may be exploring a deeper stake in Epic Games, including the possibility of an acquisition. While nothing has been confirmed, the speculation shows how important this partnership has become for both companies
It is still unclear whether the upcoming extraction shooter will be a standalone title or integrated into Fortnite as a new mode. Epic has been positioning Fortnite as a broader platform with multiple game experiences, similar to user-generated ecosystems like Roblox.
This makes both approaches possible, depending on how Epic wants to scale the project.
