Sony has increased the prices of the PlayStation 5 globally. The new pricing is set to take effect from April 2, 2026. This is one of the biggest price hikes the console has seen so far, with increases going up to $150 depending on the model.
The standard PS5 is now priced at $649.99, up from $549.99. The Digital Edition now costs $599.99, while the PlayStation 5 Pro has jumped to $899.99. Sony has also increased the price of the PlayStation Portal remote player to $249.99.
| New | Old | Price Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | $649.99 | $549.99 | $100 |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | $499.99 | $100 |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $899.99 | $749.99 | $150 |
Sony says the decision comes due to ongoing pressure in the global economy. The company added that this step was necessary to maintain the quality of its gaming hardware and overall experience.
This is not the first time Sony has increased PS5 prices, but this one feels more significant. At launch in 2020, the PS5 started at $499. Over the years, the price has steadily gone up, and it is now much higher than its original cost.
For India, Sony has not made any announcement yet. But if we look at the past trend, global price hikes are usually followed by changes here as well. The PS5 Digital Edition already saw a silent increase last year, going from ₹44,990 to ₹49,990. The disc version is still selling at ₹54,990 for now.
So there is a strong chance that India’s pricing could be revised soon. If that happens, both versions of the PS5 may become more expensive.
There is also movement around the PS5 Pro in India. The console was not launched earlier because of restrictions around the 6GHz band needed for Wi-Fi 7. That issue has now been resolved, and the console has appeared on the BIS certification site, which usually hints at an upcoming launch.
Right now, PS5 Pro units are already being sold in the grey market for around ₹70,000 to ₹80,000. If Sony launches it officially, the pricing could go even higher once taxes are added.
For gamers, this is not great news. Consoles are already expensive, and any increase makes it harder for new buyers. If you are planning to get a PS5, it might make sense to do it sooner rather than later.
At the same time, this also shows that demand for the PS5 is still strong. Even with higher prices, Sony seems confident that people will continue to buy the console.
This price hike is not just about inflation. It shows how the tech industry is changing. Companies are now prioritizing AI servers and data centers, which use the same memory and components needed for gaming consoles. This reduces supply for consumer products like the PS5 and pushes prices higher.
This move could also change how people buy consoles. First, consoles are no longer becoming cheaper over time. Traditionally, prices drop after a few years, but the PS5 is doing the opposite.
Second, this could slow down console adoption. Higher prices mean fewer new players entering the ecosystem, especially in price-sensitive markets like India.
If chip shortages continue and AI demand keeps growing, hardware prices may stay high for the next few years. Some reports even suggest that this could delay next-gen consoles like PS6.
There is also a chance that Sony is testing how much people are willing to pay. The PS5 still sells well, and the company knows that hardcore gamers will upgrade anyway.
If you are planning to buy a PS5, waiting might not help. Prices may go up instead of coming down.
