Instagram may soon remove one of its privacy features. According to information listed in the platform’s Help section, end-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

The company has not made a major public announcement yet, but the change is already mentioned in Instagram’s official help documentation.

End-to-end encryption is a privacy feature that ensures only the sender and the receiver can read messages. Even the platform itself cannot access the content of those messages or calls. This technology is commonly used in secure messaging services to protect user conversations.

Instagram introduced encrypted chats as an optional feature for users who wanted more private conversations. These chats allowed users to send messages, photos, and make calls that could not be accessed by anyone else, including Meta.

Instagram says users who have encrypted chats will see instructions inside the app. These instructions will help them download messages, photos, or other media that they may want to keep before the feature is removed.

The company also notes that some users may need to update their Instagram app before they can download affected chats. This ensures the app can properly export the data from those conversations.

Meta has not yet explained why it plans to remove end-to-end encrypted messaging from Instagram. The company has also not shared what will replace this feature in the future.
