Instagram has finally fixed a long-standing issue with Reels playback. The platform has rolled out a new “tap-to-pause” feature that lets users pause videos with just a single tap.
Until now, users had to press and hold the screen to stop playback. The moment you lifted your finger, the video would resume. This made it frustrating to read text, check details, or pause at the right moment. With the new update, a single tap pauses the video instantly. Another tap resumes playback. It works like a normal video player, which is how it should have been from the beginning.
This also changes how tapping works on Reels. Earlier, a simple tap was mainly used to mute or unmute audio. Now, once you pause a video, a dedicated mute option appears on the screen. This makes controls clearer instead of mixing multiple actions into one gesture.
Instagram has also kept its press-and-hold gesture, but with a different purpose. If you press and hold on the left or right side of the screen, the video plays at 2x speed. This is useful when you want to quickly skip through content, but it was often confused with the pause action earlier. Now both actions are clearly separated.
This update has been in testing for some time and comes after user feedback about confusing controls. Reels have grown into a major content format, but basic playback controls have not kept up. Many users found it difficult to pause videos properly, especially when creators added text-heavy content or quick transitions.
For creators, this is a meaningful change. Viewers can now pause easily to read captions, check product details, or focus on specific frames. This could improve engagement on content that requires attention, instead of just passive scrolling.
The update is now rolling out to both Android and iOS users.
