Epic Games has announced that Fortnite: Save the World will soon become free-to-play. The game mode will be available at no cost starting April 16.
Save the World was the original version of Fortnite when it launched in 2017. At that time, the game focused on cooperative gameplay where players build forts and defend against waves of enemies. It was released as a paid early access title.
Later, Epic Games shifted its focus to the much more popular Fortnite Battle Royale, which launched as a free-to-play experience. In 2020, the company confirmed that Save the World would remain a paid mode instead of becoming free.
Now Epic Games has reversed that decision. From April 16, players will be able to access Fortnite: Save the World for free.
Epic Games is also running a community registration event ahead of the free-to-play launch. Players can register to help unlock rewards for everyone.
The event includes three milestones:
- 300,000 registrations – First reward unlocks
- 700,000 registrations – Second reward unlocks
- 1,000,000 registrations – Final reward unlocks
The exact rewards have not been fully revealed yet. However, the final milestone appears to include a Snowstrike Hero skin.
Players who are new to Save the World will receive the reward after completing the in-game tutorial.
When the mode becomes free-to-play, it will be available on several platforms, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, PC, Amazon Luna, and NVIDIA GeForce NOW.
It is also important to note that Epic Games recently adjusted the amount of V-Bucks players receive for the same price. Some players say they now receive 800 V-Bucks instead of the earlier 1,000, which has led to criticism on social media.
