Call of Duty to Launch Black Ops Royale on March 13 as a Free Battle Royale Mode

Call of Duty is expanding its battle royale experience once again. The franchise will introduce a new free mode called Black Ops Royale on March 13. This new mode is designed as a tribute to Blackout, which first appeared in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. For long-time players, this move brings back a familiar style of gameplay, but with changes suited for modern audiences.

Black Ops Royale will support 100 players per match. Players will drop in as four-person squads. The action will take place on the large Avalon map, offering a wide battlefield for exploration and combat.

Unlike Warzone, this mode will not include popular mechanics such as loadouts, the gulag, or buy stations. Instead, the focus shifts back to classic scavenging. Players will need to search for weapons and upgrades during the match. The weapons will come from Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, giving the mode a fresh arsenal while keeping the Black Ops identity intact.

The developers are also bringing back several elements from the original Blackout mode. Weapon handling and bullet drop mechanics will return, though they have been adjusted to suit today’s Warzone players. This suggests a mix of old-school gunplay with modern balance improvements.

Another key feature is an open-ended perks system. Players will be able to shape their play style using perks, similar to the original Blackout experience. This could make matches feel more strategic and less dependent on pre-match customization.

With Black Ops Royale, the franchise seems to be experimenting with a more grounded battle royale format. By removing some Warzone features and focusing on scavenging and gunplay, it may appeal to players who prefer a more traditional battle royale structure.

Since the mode will be free, it is likely to attract both returning players and newcomers. The real test will be how well it balances nostalgia with current expectations in a competitive battle royale market.
