The Pokémon Company has officially announced that Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version are coming to Nintendo Switch. The games will be available digitally on the Nintendo eShop after the Pokémon Presents presentation on February 27, 2026, at 6:00 a.m. PST.
The announcement comes just ahead of Pokémon Day celebrations. This year also marks 30 years of the Pokémon franchise, which makes the timing special for long-time fans.
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. These games were remakes of the classic Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green titles that first introduced players to the Kanto region.
The upcoming Nintendo Switch release will keep much of the original charm. Players will once again explore the Kanto region, catch classic Pokémon, and follow the familiar storyline. The updated visuals from the Game Boy Advance versions will remain part of the experience.
The Switch version will also include the Sevii Islands. This area was introduced in FireRed and LeafGreen and expanded the original story with new locations and Pokémon to discover.
Players will be able to trade Pokémon and battle with others using local communication. This keeps one of the core Pokémon experiences alive. Trading and battling have always been central to the series, and it appears that this feature will remain intact on Switch.
There is no confirmation yet about online multiplayer support. For now, the focus is on local communication features.
