The Wolfenstein series may finally be getting a long-awaited comeback. According to a new report from Kotaku, a new mainline entry, believed to be Wolfenstein III, is currently in development at MachineGames. While there is no official announcement yet, both outlets say their sources have confirmed that work on the game has begun.
The last major Wolfenstein game was released in 2017 with Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Since then, the franchise has only seen spin-offs like the co-op focused Youngblood and the VR title Cyberpilot. MachineGames has been busy with other projects in recent years, most recently its Indiana Jones game, which makes the timing of these reports interesting.
There have also been clear hints from the studio itself. In a documentary, MachineGames co-founder and studio head Jerk Gustafsson said that the team still has a story to tell about B.J. Blazkowicz. He also repeated that Wolfenstein was always planned as a trilogy, and that the journey for B.J. was mapped out early on, even during the development of The New Order.
As someone who grew up playing Wolfenstein 3D, this news hits differently. It was one of the first PC games I played as a kid, and it played a big role in shaping my love for shooters. Every time a new Wolfenstein game is rumored or announced, there is a sense of excitement and nostalgia that is hard to ignore. The franchise still has that raw identity, which many modern shooters lack.
At this stage, details about the new game are unknown. There is no word on platforms, release window, or gameplay direction. Considering MachineGames has only recently finished its Indiana Jones project, it would not be surprising if Wolfenstein III is still a few years away.
