Ubisoft has delivered disappointing news for fans of the Prince of Persia franchise. The company has officially canceled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, a project that had been in development for several years and was first announced in 2020. The decision comes as part of a wider internal review that has also led to the cancellation of six other games.

According to Ubisoft, the company recently reassessed its upcoming projects and found that some titles did not meet its updated quality standards and portfolio priorities. As a result, Ubisoft has decided to narrow its focus and invest more heavily in large open-world games and live-service experiences. The company stated that the canceled projects did not align with its new direction.

The Sands of Time remake had a troubled development cycle from the start. Initially led by Ubisoft’s Pune and Mumbai studios, the project faced criticism after its reveal, followed by multiple delays. Later, the game was handed over to Ubisoft Montreal and rebooted internally. At one point, it was expected to be released in 2026, but that plan has now been dropped entirely.

In total, Ubisoft has canceled six games. While Prince of Persia is the only confirmed title, the list also includes three unannounced new IPs and one mobile game. Ubisoft has not shared further details about these projects.

Alongside the cancellations, Ubisoft has delayed seven additional games that were not yet announced. The company says these delays are meant to give development teams more time to meet higher quality benchmarks. Reports suggest that one of the delayed projects could be the long-rumored Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake, though Ubisoft has not officially confirmed this.

The changes do not stop at game development. Ubisoft has also announced the closure of two studios, Ubisoft Stockholm and Ubisoft Halifax. Layoffs are expected across several other teams as part of the restructuring. In addition, the company is asking employees to return to the office five days a week, stating that this move is intended to improve collaboration and productivity.

Financially, Ubisoft has acknowledged that these decisions will impact its short-term performance. Canceling and delaying projects will increase costs in the current financial year, but the company believes this reset is necessary for long-term stability.
