Spotify has started rolling out a new group chat feature inside its app. The update lets users chat with up to 10 people and share podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks directly within Spotify. The feature builds on Spotify’s messaging option that launched in August last year. With group chats, users can now continue conversations with friends and family without leaving the app.
Users can create group chats with up to 10 participants. All existing safety controls and user settings available for one-to-one chats also apply to group chats.
Spotify has placed some limits on who can start a chat. Users can only message people they have already shared content with before. This includes collaborators on playlists, Jam participants, or people connected through Blend playlists.
This change is part of Spotify’s broader effort to make its platform more social. Over the years, the company has added features like podcast comments, follower profiles, and activity sharing to show what others are listening to.
Spotify says its messaging tools are meant to support sharing, not replace other messaging apps. Users are still encouraged to share links and recommendations outside Spotify when needed.
Spotify confirms that messages are encrypted while stored and during transfer. However, the chats do not use end-to-end encryption.
