Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that Apex Legends will stop supporting the original Nintendo Switch later this year. The battle royale game will no longer be playable on the first-generation Switch starting August 4.
According to an announcement shared on EA’s official website, Season 29 will be the final update for Apex Legends on the original Switch. From Season 30 onward, all updates and new content will be available only on the Nintendo Switch 2 and other supported platforms.
Respawn said the decision was taken to ensure a better overall experience for players. The studio explained that the Nintendo Switch 2 offers more power and allows the team to deliver smoother gameplay and improved performance. Apex Legends launched on the Switch 2 in August 2025 and will continue to receive full support on the newer console.
The developers also confirmed that players will not lose any progress. All in-game purchases, unlocks, and earnings are linked to EA accounts. This means everything will carry over to the Nintendo Switch 2 whenever a player upgrades, regardless of when the console is purchased.
Respawn added that Apex Legends will remain fully supported on all other platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The move is only focused on retiring the original Switch version.
The company made the decision due to the major shift in Nintendo’s ecosystem. Now that Nintendo Switch 2 is gaining popularity, support for the original Switch is slowly winding down. Nintendo has already started releasing enhanced versions of major titles for the Switch 2 to offer better visuals and new gameplay modes.
Some upcoming games, such as Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, are among the last titles being designed with the original Switch in mind, while still being playable on the newer console.
