Valve has released a new version of the Steam app for Windows that makes Steam only a 64‑bit application. It ends support for 32‑bit Windows systems. Users still running 32‑bit Windows 10 will need to upgrade their computers to continue receiving updates after January 1, 2026.

This change only affects Windows 10 users, as Windows 11 has always been 64‑bit. Valve has confirmed that 32‑bit Steam will continue to receive updates until the end of 2025, but after that, users will no longer get new features or bug fixes. According to Steam’s hardware survey, only about 0.01 percent of users are still on 32‑bit Windows 10, meaning the impact is very small.

Alongside dropping 32‑bit support, the update introduces several improvements for gamers. Steam now supports Nintendo Switch 2 controllers in wired mode, adds rumble support for GameCube adapters in Wii‑U mode, and makes the new gyro modes the default. The update also fixes a number of bugs to improve performance.

While most users will not be affected, those remaining on 32‑bit systems may face challenges. After support ends, the app may continue working temporarily, but security updates will stop. This could expose users to bugs or malware. In regions where older hardware is common, some gamers may need to upgrade their PCs just to keep using Steam.

Valve’s decision is expected and logical from a technological standpoint. It allows Steam to optimize for modern systems. For the majority of users, the update promises a faster and more secure Steam experience.
