Hogwarts Legacy has crossed a major milestone. Total worldwide sales of the game have now gone past 40 million units. The update was shared by publisher Warner Bros. Games and developer Avalanche Software.
The open-world action role-playing game first launched in February 2023 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles, and PC. It later expanded to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in May 2023. The Nintendo Switch version arrived in November 2023, while the recently released Switch 2 version launched in June 2025. This long, multi-platform rollout has helped the game reach a much wider audience over time.
According to earlier reports, Hogwarts Legacy had crossed 34 million sales in late March. This means the game sold around six million additional copies in the last eight months. That is an impressive number for a single-player game, especially more than two years after its original launch.
Hogwarts Legacy is set in the Harry Potter universe, but with an original storyline. The game takes players back to the 1800s, long before the events of the books and films. Players begin their journey as a fifth-year student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and slowly grow into a powerful witch or wizard.
The game focuses heavily on exploration and player freedom. The open-world design allows players to shape their own journey through character customization, talent upgrades, and combat choices.
With over 40 million copies sold, Hogwarts Legacy now stands as one of the most successful games of the current generation. If you want to try, the game is currently free on Epic Game Store and you have until December 18 to grab it.
