Google is finally working on a feature that many Gmail users have wanted for years. The company will soon allow users to change their @gmail.com email address or create a new one as an alias.

Until now, Gmail users could not change their main @gmail.com address once it was created. Google only allowed aliases for custom domains, not standard Gmail addresses. This new update aims to change that and give users more control over their email identity.

The information comes from a new Google support document that was recently spotted online. According to the document, users will be able to change the email address linked to their Google Account, even if it ends with @gmail.com. Google explains that this email address is used to sign in and helps identify the account across Google services.

Google has not officially announced this feature yet, but the presence of a support page strongly suggests that the rollout has already started. Interestingly, the support document is currently available only in Hindi. This points to a limited rollout, possibly starting in India before expanding to other regions.

If the feature is available on your account, it should appear in the Settings section. The settings page will also include a direct link to the support document that explains how the process works.

An important detail is that changing your Gmail address will not disable the old one. The original @gmail.com address will continue to work. It means users may end up with two Gmail addresses linked to the same account.

Other email services like Outlook and Proton Mail have offered flexible alias options for a long time. With this move, Google is finally catching up in an area where users have been asking for change.

For now, there is no clear timeline on when this feature will be available to everyone. As the rollout appears to be limited, most users may need to wait a bit longer before seeing the option in their Gmail settings.
