GOG is entering a new phase, and this time it is led by someone who helped build it from the very beginning. Michał Kiciński, co founder of CD PROJEKT and one of the original founders of GOG, has officially acquired GOG from CD PROJEKT. The announcement confirms that GOG is now owned by one of its original creators.
GOG was launched in 2007 to make games easy to buy, easy to download, and playable forever. The platform focused on bringing back classic PC games and selling them without DRM.
According to the official announcement, this acquisition is meant to protect that idea. Over time, many older games stop working or disappear because of licensing issues and broken compatibility. GOG wants to make sure classic games remain playable on modern systems.
Michał Kiciński said that GOG stands for freedom, independence, and real ownership. This is important because many platforms now depend on launchers, online checks, and subscriptions.
GOG will continue to sell DRM free games. Offline installers will remain available. The GOG GALAXY app will stay optional. Users can still download and play games without being forced to stay online.
GOG also confirmed that its relationship with CD PROJEKT is not ending. Games from CD PROJEKT RED will continue to be sold on GOG, including future releases. If you support GOG through its Patron program or donate to its Preservation Program, that money will stay with GOG. The company says it plans to expand its game preservation efforts in 2026 and 2027.
GOG will continue to operate as an independent platform. It plans to keep supporting indie developers and avoid aggressive monetization practices. The company also plans to involve the community more closely in the future.
