Destiny 2: Renegades is now live, and the new expansion has already started showing a positive impact on the game’s player activity. Along with the launch, Bungie released a fresh cinematic trailer, but what many players are paying attention to is the sudden rise in concurrent users on Steam.
Steam numbers are not a complete reflection of the game’s overall health, especially since Destiny 2 runs on consoles as well. They do not indicate total sales or the full player base across platforms. However, Steam is still the biggest PC storefront, and its concurrent numbers offer a reliable snapshot of player interest during major updates.
With Renegades now available, Destiny 2’s Steam player count is the highest it has been since August 2025. According to Techlomedia’s Steam Chart, the game reached 71,063 concurrent players. This is a massive improvement compared to the lows seen in October and even the worrying dip to around 1,500 players just days before the expansion dropped. The sudden spike clearly shows that Renegades has brought many players back to the game.
However, it is still unclear whether Renegades will surpass the launch peak of the previous expansion, Edge of Fate, which reached 108,535 players on its first day. The day is not over yet, so the numbers could climb, but matching Edge of Fate will be a challenge. And even if Renegades beats that peak, it does not automatically mean commercial success. Edge of Fate itself underperformed financially despite strong launch-day activity.
Bungie also understands that Destiny 2’s reputation has declined over the last couple of years. In recent interviews, the studio admitted its mistakes after The Final Shape and expressed hope that Renegades will mark the beginning of a new direction. At the same time, rumors of Destiny 3 continue to circulate, suggesting Bungie may eventually seek a fresh start for the franchise.
For now, Destiny 2 players seem excited to jump back in. With Renegades backed by the Star Wars collaboration, Bungie will be hoping this momentum turns into long-term engagement. The coming weeks will show whether the expansion truly revives interest or if this surge is only temporary.
