CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, reaching the milestone faster than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt did in the same post-launch period. The update came through the company’s latest financial report and a video message from chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz.

He noted that Cyberpunk 2077 is now the studio’s biggest source of revenue, helped by fresh releases on new platforms and a steady return of player interest.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a unique but interesting case. When the game launched in late 2020, it faced severe criticism due to bugs, performance issues, and broken mechanics on last-gen consoles. Things were so bad that Sony removed the game from the PlayStation Store entirely. The company had to offer refunds across multiple platforms. CDPR also faced lawsuits and heavy damage to its reputation.

At that time, many expected the game to fade away and never recover. But CDPR did something not every studio chooses to do. They stayed with the game, pushed major updates, rebuilt systems, and kept improving it for years. The studio absorbed criticism, showed long-term commitment, and slowly rebuilt player trust. This effort has now paid off, and crossing 35 million sales is proof of that.

The revival started with the Edgerunners anime, which brought a massive spike in players.
Then Phantom Liberty and the 2.0 update delivered a modern and polished RPG experience. This year’s releases pushed the game even further. It revived a strong Switch 2 adaptation, a tailored Mac version, and debut on PlayStation Plus. All of these helped Cyberpunk reach new audiences, and according to CDPR, the game is now earning even more revenue than it did during the expansion launch.

To put this milestone in perspective, Cyberpunk has now sold more than Elden Ring, GTA IV, and God of War (2018). It is close to joining the list of the top 25 best-selling games in history.

CDPR has confirmed that 135 developers are now working on Cyberpunk 2 (Project Orion).
The game has entered full production, which means the core design is ready and pre-production is complete. Given CDPR’s usual development timeline, we may see a teaser in late 2026 or early 2027.

While Cyberpunk is growing, the biggest workforce remains on The Witcher 4. 447 developers are currently involved in the new Witcher game. The game focuses on Ciri, and early internal footage shown in an Nvidia demo was reportedly running at 60fps on PlayStation 5, which is impressive for such an early stage.

The Witcher 4 is also nominated for Most Anticipated Game at The Game Awards, even though CDPR has not started full marketing yet. That shows the franchise’s massive pull.

CDPR’s story over the last four years shows how a troubled game can still succeed with long-term support. Cyberpunk 2077 going from “worst launch of the generation” headlines to “35 million copies sold” is a rare transformation in gaming history.
