OpenAI is preparing to open ChatGPT to more adult content starting this December. CEO Sam Altman announced that verified adults will be able to use the chatbot for erotica and other mature content. This change comes after the company plans to implement parental controls and automatic age detection. The goal is to separate adult users from children, giving adults more freedom in how they use ChatGPT.
Altman explained, “In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.” Some users have already been experimenting with NSFW conversations, but this announcement shows OpenAI is officially allowing such use for adults.
During the DevDay 2025 event, OpenAI also shared updates for developers. The company stated that “support for mature (18+) experiences will arrive once appropriate age verification and controls are in place.” This indicates that adult apps and interactions through ChatGPT will soon be allowed. After December, developers can create experiences specifically for adults without breaking OpenAI’s guidelines.
The move comes amid concerns about ChatGPT’s impact on mental health. There have been serious incidents, including the death of 16-year-old Adam Raine, who reportedly used ChatGPT to plan his own suicide. To address these risks, GPT-5 has reduced overly sycophantic behavior and added notifications reminding users to take breaks.
