Apple is reportedly planning something big for the iPhone’s 20th anniversary in 2027. If recent reports are correct, the company might skip the iPhone 19 name and go directly to iPhone 20. This information comes from Omdia’s senior researcher Heo Moo-yeol, who suggests that Apple wants to align the model number with the 20-year milestone.
This would not be the first time Apple has done something like this. Back in 2017, the company launched the iPhone X instead of the iPhone 9 to mark the tenth anniversary of the iPhone. That model introduced a new design language with an edge-to-edge OLED display and Face ID, which still influences iPhone design today.
If the leaks are accurate, the iPhone 20 series could bring another major redesign. Reports suggest Apple is working on a bezel-less display with curved lines that will make the phone look like a single piece of glass from the front. It sounds like Apple wants to make this phone feel futuristic and symbolic of how far the iPhone has come in two decades.
The report also mentions some possible lineup changes before 2027. Apple might skip the standard iPhone 18 next year and focus on iPhone 18 Air, iPhone 18 Pro, and the long-rumored iPhone Fold. The foldable iPhone has been in development for a while and could finally become part of Apple’s lineup.
By 2027, Apple could change its release pattern, too. The regular iPhone 20 and a more affordable iPhone 18e might launch in the first half of the year, while the iPhone 20 Pro, iPhone 20 Air, and Fold 2 may arrive later in the fall.
While none of this is confirmed, the idea of skipping “19” and going straight to “20” makes sense from a marketing point of view. It fits perfectly with the 20th anniversary theme and gives Apple a chance to celebrate the milestone with a fresh look and name.
