Apple has officially started rolling out iOS 26 to iPhones today, September 15, just days before the launch of the new iPhone 17 series on September 19. The free update is now available to download on compatible devices, and it brings a refreshed design, smarter features, and deep integration of Apple’s new AI system, Apple Intelligence.
Why the Name iOS 26?
This year, Apple changed the naming style of its software. Instead of sequential numbers, the company has shifted to a year-based model, similar to how carmakers name their vehicles. That is why the update is called iOS 26. The same branding applies across iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26. Macs continue to follow their California-inspired names, with this year’s version called macOS Tahoe.
A Fresh Look and Smarter Features
The most noticeable change is the new “Liquid Glass” design language. App icons, widgets, and screens now look more dynamic and customizable, giving iPhones a more modern and fluid appearance.
But the real highlight is Apple Intelligence, Apple’s systemwide AI that runs directly on-device. It powers features like Live Translation in Phone, FaceTime, and Messages. Apple Intelligence lets users translate text and audio in real time. The AI also introduces visual intelligence, which can understand what is on the screen and suggest useful actions, like adding events to the Calendar or finding a product online.
Interestingly, Apple has also partnered with ChatGPT, which allows users to ask questions about what they are viewing on-screen to get more context or information.
Updates to Everyday Apps
Apple has also upgraded many of its core apps. Here’s a list of features coming to core apps.
- Phone and Messages: Call screening, Hold Assist for customer service, message polls, custom chat backgrounds, and Apple Cash in group chats.
- CarPlay: Live Activities support with more information at a glance while driving.
- Music and Maps: Lyrics translation in Apple Music, smarter Maps that learn your preferred routes, and a history of your “Visited Places.”
- Wallet: Digital IDs using U.S. passports, boarding passes with airport maps, luggage tracking via Find My, and shareable Live Activities.
- Clock: Finally, more alarm snooze customization with options between 1 and 15 minutes.
Compatibility and Apple Intelligence Limits
iOS 26 works with iPhone 11 and newer, along with the iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). However, Apple Intelligence features are restricted to the latest hardware: iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, and iPads and Macs with M1 or newer chips.

How to Download iOS 26
To get the update, head to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone. Keep in mind that during the first few hours, downloads may be slower because millions of users rush to update at the same time.
The rollout of iOS 26 feels like the beginning of a new era for iPhones. Apple has shifted to year-based naming, which makes the branding simpler and easier to follow. The update also introduces Apple Intelligence, Apple’s new AI system that promises smarter, more helpful iPhones while keeping privacy at the center.
But what is surprising is that Apple barely mentioned this during the launch of the iPhone 17 series. Instead, the company seems to be rolling out Apple Intelligence slowly and carefully. In fact, the much-talked-about Siri upgrade has been delayed, which shows that Apple is not ready to deliver the full AI experience yet.
For most users, iOS 26 is worth installing right away because of the refreshed design, improvements in core apps, and better personalization. However, if you want to try the advanced Apple Intelligence features, you will need one of the latest iPhones — the iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, or an M1-and-later iPad or Mac.
So while iOS 26 is a solid step forward, it feels like Apple is only offering a glimpse of its AI future rather than the complete package.
