YouTube Music Turns 10, Adds New Features to Take on Spotify

YouTube Music

YouTube Music is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a big update. The app is getting new features that bring it closer to Spotify and other rivals.

One of the most interesting additions is “Taste Match” playlists. This feature creates shared playlists based on overlapping music interests of multiple users, similar to Spotify Blend. The playlists will update daily with songs that reflect everyone’s combined taste.

YouTube Music is also becoming more social. Users will now be able to comment on albums and playlists directly in the app. The platform is adding loyalty badges like “First to Watch” and “Top Listener,” with more badges coming soon. Artists will also get recognition when their music videos hit milestones like 100,000, 1 million, or even 1 billion views.

The service is also partnering with Bandsintown. Fans watching music videos and Shorts on YouTube will now see updates about concerts, upcoming releases, and even merch.

YouTube also shared some numbers to show how far its music service has come. The catalog now has over 300 million tracks, which is three times more than Spotify’s 100 million. It also offers more than 4 billion user-created playlists, with 1.8 billion set as public.

YouTube Music has been growing fast. The platform had 100 million users in early 2024. By March 2025, that number had crossed 125 million across YouTube Music and YouTube Premium.

With these new features, YouTube Music wants to be more than just a streaming app. It is trying to combine music discovery, social interaction, and fan engagement all in one place.
