India-based developer Ayelet Studio has announced Son of Thanjai, a new action-adventure game set in the Chola empire of the 11th century. The game will release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam. A release date has not been revealed yet.

Son of Thanjai is described as a cinematic action-adventure where you play as a Chola king torn between duty and destiny. The empire of Thanjavur is no longer the same, and unrest brews in its temples and streets. As a ruler living in the shadow of your father’s greatness, you must carve your own path while protecting your people and securing your throne.

The game promises both stealth and combat. Players will be able to mount horses, elephants, and even bulls to chase down enemies. Combat is built around the Surulvaal, a deadly whip-sword, with moves inspired by the ancient martial art Kalarippayattu. The game features fluid melee battles, visceral finishers, and multiple weapons to master. You can also infiltrate enemy camps, interrogate targets, and gather intelligence to shape your journey.

One of the highlights of Son of Thanjai is its cultural setting. The developers have recreated Thanjavur and the Chola empire with rich detail. Players will explore temples, witness folk performances, and interact with priests, farmers, merchants, and fishermen. Every choice and every interaction promises to reflect the culture of 11th-century South India.

The game also puts focus on storytelling, with themes of legacy, belief, and destiny. It is not just about combat but about building your own identity as a king.

For Indian gamers, this is exciting because very few games dive deep into Indian history and culture. Son of Thanjai could be a landmark title if it delivers on its promise of blending cinematic storytelling with authentic cultural representation.
