Sony increases PS5 prices in several countries

Sony has announced a price hike for the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition in some markets, including Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. The change comes due to rising inflation and currency fluctuations. These price changes will go into effect starting April 14.

In Europe, the PS5 Digital Edition will now cost €499.99, which is €50 more than the previous price. The UK sees a similar increase, with the new price set at £429.99. Interestingly, the standard PS5 with the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will not see a price increase in Europe and the UK.

In Australia and New Zealand, however, both versions are getting more expensive. The standard PS5 now costs AUD 829.95 in Australia and NZD 949.95 in New Zealand. The Digital Edition is priced at AUD 749.95 and NZD 859.95.

While the PS5 Pro pricing stays the same, there is a bit of good news—Sony is lowering the price of the detachable disc drive. In Europe, it will now cost €79.99 (down from €119.99), and in the UK, £69.99 (down from £99.99). Australia and New Zealand also see similar drops, and it will cost AUD $124.95 and NZD $139.95, respectively.

But what about India?

Sony has not announced any price hikes for India, at least not yet. That is a relief for Indian gamers, especially considering how expensive the PS5 already is in the country. Currently, the standard PS5 is priced at around ₹54,990, and the Digital Edition is ₹44,990. Even at these prices, the console is hard to get due to limited stock and huge demand.

If Sony does decide to raise prices in India, it could make things worse. The gaming community here is already dealing with high import duties, GST, and inconsistent availability. Another price hike might push more people to buy older consoles, go for Xbox, or even move to PC gaming.

Sony’s move makes sense from a business point of view. The world economy is shaky, and costs are rising. But this kind of decision always hits gamers the hardest. It is especially frustrating when we are already paying a premium and still struggling to find units in stock. I just hope Sony also focuses on improving stock availability instead of just changing prices.
