Spectre Divide, the free-to-play 3v3 shooter, is shutting down just six months after its initial launch and only weeks after making its way to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Alongside the game’s shutdown, its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell broke the news in a statement on social media, citing financial struggles as the key reason behind the decision.
“Unfortunately, the Season 1 launch hasn’t achieved the level of success we needed to sustain the game and keep Mountaintop afloat.”
At first, Spectre Divide showed promise. The game managed to attract 400,000 players in its opening week, with peak concurrent player counts reaching 10,000 across platforms. However, the numbers quickly dropped, and the revenue wasn’t enough to keep the game or the studio running.
Spectre Divide’s servers will be shut down within the next 30 days. To compensate players, Mountaintop will refund any money spent since the start of Season 1.
The shutdown also contradicts Mountaintop’s earlier claims. In October 2024, Mitchell had reassured players that Spectre Divide wasn’t going anywhere and that the studio had enough funds to keep the game running long-term. Clearly, things took a sharp turn.
