Netflix has been expanding its gaming ambitions for a while now, but Spirit Crossing marks a big first—it’s the company’s first-ever MMO. The announcement was made at GDC 2025 and Spry Fox, the studio behind cozy hits like Cozy Grove, is developing the game. Netflix is marketing it as a “cozy MMO” with open-world exploration and the game is set to launch later this year.

The launch trailer makes it clear that Spirit Crossing is not your typical MMO with dungeons, raids, or fast-paced combat. The game has a soft, pastel art style, cute creatures, and relaxing music. It will focus on open-world exploration, crafting, and building homes. Players can also customize neighborhoods and enjoy a laid-back experience instead of fast-paced action.

Netflix has been adding more games to its platform, including both third-party titles and original games. However, the company has yet to taste the success in this segment. Last year, it had to shut down a studio working on its first AAA game.

MMOs are not easy to make, and many fail to keep players engaged. But if Spirit Crossing connects with the right audience, it could be a success.

Netflix has opened closed alpha playtest sign-ups for early access. If you like cozy games with multiplayer elements, it might be worth checking out.
