Microsoft is phasing out the Remote Desktop app for Windows and confirmed that the official support will end on May 27, 2025. Users who rely on Remote Desktop for accessing Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box will need to switch to the new Windows App to maintain uninterrupted access.

The Windows App introduces several improvements over the Remote Desktop app, offering a more unified and efficient remote access experience. Key enhancements include:

  • Unified Access: A single interface for Cloud PCs, virtual desktops, and other Windows services.
  • Better Display Support: Multi-monitor capabilities and dynamic display resolution adjustments.
  • Enhanced Remote Work Features: Improved device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimizations, and seamless account switching.

After May 27, 2025, connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box via the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store will be blocked. Other Remote Desktop app users will no longer receive support.

It is important to note that this change applies only to the Remote Desktop app downloaded from the Microsoft Store. The Remote Desktop client standalone installer (MSI) will continue to be available and supported.

Microsoft noted that the Windows App is still evolving, and there may be missing features. Users are suggested to review the Known Issues and Limitations page to stay updated on feature rollouts. To remove the Remote Desktop app, refer to Microsoft’s Uninstall Your Apps and Remove Apps documentation for detailed steps.
