15 Malicious Android Apps Removed from Google Play After 8 Million Downloads

In a shocking development for Android users, McAfee has uncovered 15 SpyLoan apps on Google Play. These apps have collectively over 8 million downloads, making a large number of Android users at risk. These malicious apps masquerade as financial apps and target users primarily in South America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. Although Google has removed these malicious apps, their download numbers hints a persistent threat in the mobile ecosystem.

SpyLoan apps promise quick loans with minimal requirements. However, these apps are designed to exploit users at every turn. Once install, these apps use one-time passwords to to confirm users are in targeted regions. It requires sensitive documents such as personal documents, banking details, and employee information. These apps also collect data from contacts, SMS, call logs, and even access the camera and microphone. It use the stolen information extort users.

Once loands are disbursed, users face exorbitant interest rates, hidden fees, and aggressive harassment for repayment.

  • KreditKu-Uang Online – 500,000 downloads
  • Dana Kilat-Pinjaman kecil – 500,000 downloads

Despite Google’s rigorous app review process, these malicious apps slipped through the cracks. It highlights the gaps in app approval process.

McAfee’s investigation revealed a 75% surge in SpyLoan apps between Q2 and Q3 2024. This growth was driven by deceptive marketing. Some of these apps mimic reputable financial institutions through names, logos, and user interfaces. These apps also use social engineering and encourage users apply for loan by showing fake offers and more.

SpyLoan apps have hidden fees, unauthorized charges, and spiraling debt. These apps also misuse personal data for extortion or sale to third parties. We have seen several incidents where Harassment and blackmail led to anxiety and reputational damage.
