WhatsApp has added three new features for improved calling experience across the platform. The company has improved the group video calling limit on desktop platforms, added screen sharing with audio, and introduced a new codec for improved calling even on slow connections.

Now up to 32 people can participate in a video call across devices. Previously, 32 participants could only be on mobile devices. On Windows, it was limited to 16 and 8 on macOS. Windows and Mac users can also have more people on a group video call.

With so many participants, it becomes chaotic to identify who is currently speaking. So, the company has added a speaker spotlight feature. It brings the profile photo of the current speaker to the top of the screen. So, anyone can easily identify who’s calling.

Now the company has also added screen sharing with audio. Click the up arrow icon, select Share audio, and choose the dingo you want to share.

WhatsApp has also changed the call codec for improved audio and video quality, especially in slow-speed connections. This new bitrate is called MLow, Meta Low Bitrate audio codec. Low achieves two times better quality than Opus.

WhatsApp is also working on a feature to transcribe voice messages. It enhances convenience and accessibility. This feature has already been spotted in the WhatsApp for iPhone beta. This feature downloads 150MB of additional data. Users Will also be able to select the preferred language for transcriptions.
