The Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, has issued an advisory on spoof calls impersonating govt officials. The ministry says that calls are coming from foreign numbers and are threatening people saying their numbers are being used in some illegal activities and will be disconnected if not taken any action.
These fraud calls are being made for financial fraud. So, the government warns users to stay alert and not share their personal information.
As per the advisory, users are receiving both normal calls and WhatsApp calls impersonating DoT officials. The caller warns innocent users that their number will be disconnected if they don’t follow what the caller says.
“The DoT has issued an advisory about WhatsApp calls from foreign origin mobile numbers (like +92-xxxxxxxxxx) impersonating government officials and duping the people,” noted the advisory.
I have also received these calls multiple times saying there’s a number linked to my Aadhar is found in illegal activities. The caller also said that all my numbers would be blocked if I didn’t follow their guide. I was aware of these fraud calls, so I didn’t follow the caller. But a lot of innocent users fell into their trap.
