At the Snapdragon Summit 2023, Qualcomm unveiled Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 mobile platform for flagship smartphones. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is the successor to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and promises to offer 30% performance improvement. It also boasts on-device AI.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 includes an octave-core processor that includes 1 Cortex-X4 prime core running up to 3.3 GHz, five performance cores running at up to 3.2 GHz, and 2 efficiency cores running at up to 2.3 GHz.

It also has an upgraded Adreno GPU that promises 25% better performance and 25% power efficiency compared to its predecessor. The GPU also supports 1Hz Variable Refresh Rate in DPU for low-power display modes.

For improved gaming performance, it has a full suite of Snapdragon Elite Gaming features including multi-source lighting powered by Hardware-Accelerated Ray Tracing. The Chip supports up to 240 FPS on 240 Hz displays. The Snapdragon Game Super Resolution can upscale game scenes up to 8K on external displays. The Adreno Frame Motion Engine 2.0 generates even higher-quality scenes.

The AI Engine in the SoC supports multi-modal generative AI models including LLM, LVM, and transformer network-based automatic speech recognition. The chip can run up to 20 tokens per second for instant AI assistant responses. It also has the fastest stable diffusion that can generate an image in a fraction of a second.

The Soc supports up to 24GB 4800 MHz LPDDR5x memory and UFS 4.0 storage.

It has 12 layers of Spectra 18-bit triple Cognitive ISP. AI also enhances camera abilities. It features an object eraser for videos to remove unwanted objects or people from videos. The Vlogger’s View can capture videos from both the front and rear cameras at the same time. It also offers a Photo Expansion feature that uses generative AI to extend an image beyond the original captured data.

It supports up to 36 megapixels triple camera, up to 64+36 megapixels dual camera, up to 108 megapixels single camera with ZSL, and up to 200 megapixels single camera. It can capture up ti 10-bit color depth photo and video capture, 8K HDR Video Capture, and 64 MP Photo Capture.

The SoC supports 4K at 60 Hz / QHD+ at 144 Hz on de ice display and up to 8K @ 30 Hz or Up to 1080 @ 240 Hz external display.

The SoC supports Wi-Fi 7 offering up to 5.8 Gbps speed. It also supports dual Bluetooth connectivity. Qualcomm also talked about a new feature called Snapdragon Seamless. It is designed to make it easy to pair laptops and phones with peripherals across manufacturers and OS platforms. This feature aims to make it easier to switch between devices.

Qualcomm confirmed that devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be available in the coming weeks. Notable smartphone makers including Asus, Honor, iQOO, Meizu, Nio, Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, realme, Redmi, RedMagic, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE have already started working on devices powered by the all new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
