Apple unveils M2 Ultra

At WWDC 2023, Apple announced its new system-on-a-chip (SoC) M2 Ultra. Apple claims that M2 Ultra is the largest and most capable chip Apple has ever created. The SoC promises to deliver huge performance increases to Mac.

The new M2 Ultra features a 24-core CPU that includes 16 next-generation high-performance cores and eight next-generation high-efficiency cores. It claims to deliver up to 20 percent faster performance than M1 Ultra. The GPU includes 60 or 76 next-generation cores. It means up to a 30 percent improvement compared to the GPU of the M1 Ultra.

M2 Ultra features a 32-core Neural Engine that boasts 40 percent faster performance than M1 Ultra.

Apple M2 Ultra

M2 Ultra includes 134 billion transistors, 20 billion more than M1 Ultra. It also supports up to a breakthrough 192GB of memory capacity and features 800GB/s of memory bandwidth. M2 Ultra also features a more powerful CPU that is 20 percent faster than M1 Ultra. The GPU in M2 Ultra is up to 30 percent faster and the Neural Engine is up to 40 percent faster.

The new SoC also features a media engine with twice the capabilities of the M2 Max. It has dedicated, hardware-enabled H.264, HEVC, and ProRes encode and decode. So devices powered by M2 Ultra can offer playback up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video. The display engine supports up to six Pro Display XDRs
