WhatsApp to improve its system to address increasing spam calls in India

WhatsApp

For the past few days, most Indian users are getting Spam audio calls and messages promising high-paying jobs. After several users complained about spam calls on social media, it caught the attention of the Indian government. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, promises to send a notice to WhatsApp for addressing the spam calls issue.

In response to this, WhatsApp confirmed that it is committed to protecting the privacy and security of users. It already has several safety tools like Block & Report in the app to prevent Spam. The company will continue to educate users about them.

WhatsApp will also ramp up its AI & ML systems to bring down such incidents in the coming days. The company claims that it should reduce the current calling rate by at least 50%.

Recently, several users reported receiving international audio calls and then messages promising part-time jobs. Once a user responds, he is asked to do easy tasks such as liking YouTube videos and subscribing to a YouTube channel. After the initial task, the user is asked to join a Telegram group.

In the Telegram group, users are offered better opportunities with a catch. They are asked to deposit an amount for better opportunities. If a user makes the payment, he is kicked out of the group.

India is the biggest market for WhatsApp which has over 500 million active users from India. Users were already frustrated by SPAM messages sent by businesses without their consent. Now they are suffering scam calls.
