Soon after Clubhouse became a trending platform, several social media platforms rushed to build a clone. But the usage of audio-only conversation platforms was short-lived. Reddit also launched a live audio section Reddit Talk in April 2021. Now two years after its launch, Reddit has decided to shut down Reddit Talk.

Reddit claims that incorporating audio into its platform needs “significant work” and the company is now shifting its focus to building a TikTok-style feed for video discovery.

The company was using a 3rd party audio vendor for Reddit Talk. Now the vendor is shutting down its service. So, the company needed to make something of its own for keeping Reddit Talk alive.

“Our original plan was to maintain Talk while we worked on this. Unfortunately, the 3rd party audio vendor we use for Talk is shutting down its service. In other words, the resources required to keep Talk live during this transition increased substantially,” Reddit said in a post.

Reddit Talk will be available till March 21. Users will be able to download talks until June 1. But talks hosted after September 22 will be available to download.

Reddit is also removing “Happening Now” which was displaying active real-time conversations.
