WhatsApp gets proxy support to bypass censorship

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has launched proxy support for users globally. This will let users get access to WhatsApp if the connection is blocked. The company confirms that connecting through proxy provides the same level of privacy and security the app offers. Personal messages will still be end-to-end encrypted.

For using the proxy feature, users need to update to the latest version of the app. Then go to settings, tap ‘Storage and Data’ and select ‘Proxy’. Here tap ‘Use Proxy’ and enter the proxy address. Save the proxy address to connect.

If the connection via Proxy is successful, you will see a checkmark. Even if the Proxy connection is successful, but you fail to send or receive WhatsApp messages, the proxy may have been blocked.

WhatsApp proxy feature will help in countries where the government blocks access to WhatsApp messaging in an attempt to censor it. Connecting through a proxy routes their messages from different servers.

The use of a proxy can slow down your experience. So, you may not be able to make calls or share large files. If authorities block the proxy, you may have to switch to the new proxy.

WhatsApp is the biggest messaging platform used by more than two billion people from over 180 countries. The company keeps adding new features and privacy controls to provide a better experience to users. Now that Iran has denied people’s human rights by shutting down access to WhatsApp, the company decided to bring proxy support.

WhatsApp proxy support is now available for both Android and iOS platforms. Update your apps if you do not see the Proxy option.
