Digilocker-verified documents to Android's Files app

At Google for India 2022 event, Google announced a few initiatives for the Indian market. One of the key initiatives will bring Digilocker-verified documents to Android phones. Soon, Android users will be able to access their Digilocker-verified documents from the File app.

Google has partnered with the National e-Governance Division and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to let people access their authentic digital documents directly from the Files app on Android. So, users will not have to look for documents on their phones when needed.

Files app will keep these documents in a separate vault and can only be accessed using unique lock screen authentication.

Google uses a custom AI model to scan the device and identify key documents. Then it uses OCR technology and machine learning models to recognize relevant text and information in those documents. Google confirmed that all these models run locally on the device and cannot be accessed by anyone including Google.
